    The death and injury on Australian roads is costing the nation $17billion each year, according to a University of Queensland, represented 2.3 percent of Australia's gross domestic product.

    Road Trauma summary:

    • Over 60 % of motorists are still killed at intersections.
    • The risk of being involved in a crash doubles with each 5km/h increase in speed over 60km/h.
    • Fatigue is a factor in approximately 20% or crashes.
    • Excessive speed accounts for 20% of all fatal crashes.
    • The approximate cost of each fatality to the community is over $1,300,000.
    • Each major injury costs the community over $150,000 in direct health care.

    Males constitute 72% of all road users killed

    • The 17 to 25 age group accounts for the largest numbers of fatalities.

    In Victoria alone;

    • Over 40 accidents a day involve under 25 aged drivers.
    • Every 26 minutes a person is injured in a crash.
    • Every 4 days one person receives brain injuries in crashes.
    • Every 8 days a person becomes paraplegic.
    • Every day a person loses their life on our roads.

    For DEA the following are the key statistics:

      • Road related injuries are the leading cause of death for people aged 10 – 24 throughout the world.
      • In Victoria drivers aged 18 – 25 represent 13% of all licenced drivers but account for 27% of the states road toll.  This group of drivers (under 25) are twice as likely to die on our roads.
